It’s not often that I decide to read two thrillers back to back… well, actually, we could say three since I just finished reading One of Us Knows by Alyssa Cole.
But I was still in a thriller mood and read Like a Sister by Kellye Garrett and then The Cloisters by Katy Hay – both of which are set in New York. And…wow! Yes, you should read them both this summer.
Addictive reads
Both books are absolute page-turners. I had a hard time putting them aside to do things like…sleep. I wanted to know what would happen next. So, be prepared for sleepless nights. Kellye Garrett’s Like a Sister focuses on hip hop and new money while Katy Hay’s The. Cloisters focuses on the occult, tarot cards and old money. Still, both stories are set in New York, with one (Like a Sister) focused on the Bronx and the Upper East Side while the other (The Cloisters) on Upper Manhattan.
Both are thrillers with a slow-burn feel that keeps pulling you along until you are thoroughly entrenched. What I loved about both books is how they kept me guessing. Whenever I thought I had everything figured out, they threw me a curveball.
And that suits me just fine.
I don’t want everything handed to me on a silver platter.
I want to exercise my brain while reading.
Both books also tackle class and economic differences, the feeling of being on the outside looking in and how this affects people. But, of course, the mystery – the whodunnit and why – is the main factor and in both books it’s enticing enough to keep you hooked.
So, do yourself a favor – order them both and get hooked.
And make sure you also order Kellye Garrett’s Missing White Woman if you enjoy Like a Sister. Just finished reading it and it is a great read.
